Abstract

Studies show association of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alfha), interleukin 6 (IL6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) with systemic manifestations of COPD and greater mortality risk. However, there are no studies showing the evolution of these markers. In a previous study, 133 patients with mild to moderate COPD were followed and held the assessment of diagnostic and prognostic markers of COPD after three years. In 77 of these patients were measured inflammatory markers in peripheral blood at baseline and collected blood during reassessment after three years. The aim of the present study is to assess the evolution of systemic inflammatory markers in COPD patients after three years. Furthermore, evaluate the association of these markers with other markers of disease and exacerbation and verify the evolution of hematocrit and hemoglogina in the period and its association with inflammatory markers. The dosages of the cytokines TNF-alpha and IL-6 will be carried out in duplicates by enzyme immunoassays (ELISA). C-reactive protein (CRP) will be quantified in duplicate, with use of ultra-sensitive kits. Data analysis to determine the evolution of the markers will be accomplished using the paired t-test for variables with normal distribution and Wilcoxon test for nonparametric data. The association of inflammatory markers with the development of other markers and exacerbation will be assessed by logistic regression analysis. (AU)
