Abstract

The interest in measuring healthcare provider's attitudes about patient safety is growing in the world. However, in Brazil, research patient safety field is incipient. Validity instruments that measure caregiver's attitudes and perceptions about safety are very important tools to investigate main problems that difficult implementing preventive measures to ensure quality in the assistance. The main goal of this project is to translate, validate and apply the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ)- Short Form to Brazilian language. It aims also evaluate psychometric properties of Portuguese version and adaptation to the Brazilian hospital context in order to apply the validated instrument in caregivers of four hospitals in the Northeast, Southeast and MIddle west of Brazil and correlate the score obtained in scale with the some Patient Safety Indicators (PSI). Methodological and cross-sectional research with quantitative approach. The project involves two phases: the first one covers the scale translation and validation and the second one concerns to the application of scale adapted to Brazilian hospitals context. Scale translation and validation will follow these steps: translation, translation back to the original language, evaluation versions of the original, pre-testing and evaluation of psychometric properties. In the second search phase, the scale will be applied to all the health professionals (doctors, nurse assistants, nurse managers, technicians and physiotherapists) of these two hospitals. The authors of the instrument has authorized its translation to Portuguese. The data will be inserted into an electronic database, using the Microsoft ® Access Program, for further processing and analysis. Data processing is done by the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). For the analysis, reliability will be calculated from the alpha Cronbach to scale as a whole and for each domain. The scores will be compared with the Patient Safety Indicators (PSI), such as decubitus ulcer, shorter lengths for patient permanence in hospital and lower ventilation associated to pneumonia rates. The research project will be forwarded to the Research Ethics Committee of the two institutions. With this study, we want to have the first validated instrument in Portuguese in order to assess attitude of security among caregivers. This project was approved for grant in the Small Research Grant in patient safety from the World Health Organization - World Alliance for Patient Safety. (AU)
