Translation and cultural adaptation of the instrument "Global Appraisal of Individual Needs" for Brazilian's adolescents use

Abstract

Facing a growing use of alcohol and drugs by teenagers and a greater demand for health services for this population treatment, this study aims to contribute with the health care, by implementing the Brazilian translation and cultural validation of a data collection instrument for diagnosis and monitoring of this major public health problem. This study is of great importance, since it is well established that the health practices should be based on evidence. The instrument to be studied is from United States and has been validated for the Spanish and Japanese. It is called "Global Appraisal of Individual Needs", hereinafter called GAIN, and aims to identify various psychosocial problems among adolescents. The GAIN is a series of measurements idealized to support gradual therapeutic practices, including initial assessment, brief interventions, diagnosis support, treatment planning, monitoring of clinical changes and other factors that enable a practice most focused on the individual needs of each adolescent. The expected results are a successful instrument adaptation, according to the development stages found in the literature, thus achieving a version of GAIN for Brazilians adolescents use, culturally adapted and proved statistically significant.
