Abstract

Capture and sequestration of C02 is very important method of controlling greenhouse gas emissions. In numerous cases, the methods used by industries consist of C02 removal by chemical absorption/desorption processes with amine solutions and recirculation of amines for reuse. However, the costs are high because of the high energy consumption in regeneration and solvent loss and degradation. So the technology is growing in importance with the developing of innovative solvents with good absorption rate and lower regeneration cost. This works focuses on the study of the absorption rates of C02 in common and innovative amines and liquid ionics. In a first step, experiments will be conducted in a wetted wall column to select solvents and to determine the absorption rates for a system with a known interfacial area, in isothermal conditions and under atmospheric pressure. The variables that will be considered are solvent concentration in the range 0,1 - 3,0 M, CO2 concentration in the range 2 - 15 % in the air/C02 mixture and the temperature in the range 273 - 323 K. In a second step, a column filled with structured packing will be employed to experimental and theoretical study of the efficience of the absorption process in the selected solvents as a function of the liquid and gas flow rates at different concentrations and at atmospheric pressure. A model will be developed on the basis of mass and energy balances, chemical reactions, mass transfer process in gas and liquid phases and the results of absorption rate will be obtained in wetted wall column. The results of the mathematical simulations using the model will be compared with the experimental absorption efficiencies. This work may be a important contribution to extend the knowledge of C02 absorption in innovative solvents, in more compact columns and a low operational cost for the solvent regeneration. (AU)
