Mangroves are transitional ecosystems between continental and marine environments of great environmental, economical and social importance and under strong anthropic stress. However, the soil mineralogical assemblage of mangrove soils is quite poor known besides it has crucial functions on pedogenetic and geochemical evolution on these soils. Thus it has great applicability on the understanding of phenomenon associated with toxic substances behavior, such as heavy metals and organic pollutants. The current project aims to investigate the mineralogical assemblage of mangrove soils from all regions of Brazilian coast with the purpose of understand the origin of the clay minerals in this environment and its associations with transgression/regression events occurred at the sea level with the geomorphological and oceanographic characteristics where the mangroves are located, and with geochemical aspects of the adjacent continental areas which work as sediment source. For this it will, be conducted qualitative and semi-quantitative mineralogical analysis of the coarse and fine clay fractions from the XRD, Infrared Spectroscopy, transmission and electronic microscopy, atomic force microscopy, besides chemical analysis of clay fraction by ICP-MS. It's supposed with this collected data from these techniques to get better details about mangrove clay minerals composition and consequently the identification of the related processes with the genesis of these components on the studied environments.
