Functional evaluation of blood and milk leukocytes of cows naturally infected by bovine leukosis virus

Abstract

The bovine enzootic leukosis virus (VLEB) infects leukocytes mainly B lymphocytes. The potential consequences of the defense mechanisms, also of the mammary gland, had been not yet clarified. The aim of this study is to evaluate the functional activity of blood and milk leukocytes of cows naturally infected by the bovine leukosis virus. First, 30 dairy cows divided in three groups will be selected from 100 dairy cows in lactation according to the results of immunodiffusion test and the leukogtam. The results will be share in: group I, animals non-infected; group 2, animals BLV-mfected without limphocytosis and group 3, animals BLV-infected with persistent limphocytosis. For this evaluation, clinical examination of the mammary gland and the functional evaluation of the blood and milk leukocytes based on phagocytosis rates, intracellular hydrogen peroxide production, cellular death and immunophenotipagem of leukocyes will be performed. The data will be analysed by the One way analysis of variance (One-way ANOVA) and Tukey-Kramer or test t for data with normal distribution, and Mann- Whitney or Kruskal-Wallis for data with non-normal distribution.
