Abstract
As the life expectancy is increasing in the general population, dementia has becoming a high prevalent condition in the elderly. The clinical intermediate phase situated between normal cognitive changes related to aging and dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease (AD), is known as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). The possible progression of MCI towards dementia makes the characterization of this entity of great importance to the patient, providing early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention. Imaging using MRI, SPECT and PET can provide different substrates of the cognitive impairment, promoting early diagnosis of the MCI or dementia, far before the symptoms are apparent and specific for that neurodegenerative disorder. Another potential role of neuroimaging is predicting the ones who are going to convert from MCI to Alzheimer´s. Therefore, our purpose is to correlate structural volume changes (VBM-MRI) with rCBF and regional glucose metabolism changes (SPECT and PET), both using voxel-based quantification method, in the same cohort of patients with mild cognitive impairment.
