Abstract

Carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater is a rare neoplasm and presents better resectability rate than other periampullary carcinomas (pancreatic head, duodenum and common bile duct). However, tumors with same stage and similar clinical factors have not always similar prognostics after resection, having patients with long survival and others with early recurrence of the illness, what it suggests the necessity of additional prognostics markers. Molecular pathogenesis of ampullary cancer is not yet well clarified. Some chromosomal alterations already had been demonstrated in these tumors, as mutations of the genes K-frogs, APC and p53, chromosomal losses in the genes 17p and 18q and the occurrence of instability of microsatellites. However, the results of the diverse studies are very heterogeneous and conflicting, a time that the ampullary adenocarcinoma can originate it from the simple pancreatobiliary mucinous epithelium or of the intestinal epithelium of duodenal papilla. Using immunohistochemical staining we can carry through a more precision differentiation between these types. The aim of the present study is to find markers prognostics to the standing of the patients operated for ampulla of Vater neoplasm through immunohistochemical examinations and genetic expression of chromosomal alterations (AU)
