Abstract

Denture base acrylic resin is prone to accumulate biofilm over the surface, one of the main causes for denture stomatitis. The incorporation of an antiseptic agent into denture bases has a great preventive potential against that accumulation but needs further investigation. The aim of this project is the evaluation of an antiseptic monomer that is able to copolymerize with conventional acrylic resins against microorganisms that cause stomatitis. Moreover, several properties of a poli(methyl methacrylate)-based material for denture bases associated to this monomer will be assessed. The tested compound will be the methacryloyloxyundecylpyridinium bromide (MUPB). It will be initially tested by a citotoxicity assay over fibroblasts. A study of its minimal inhibitory and fungicide concentrations will also be carried out. Another series of tests will be conducted over a heat-polymerized acrylic resin incorporating different concentrations of MUPB. Contact antimicrobial activity will be determined for Candida albicans, C. dubliniensis, C. glabrata, Lactobacillus casei, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans. A chemical analysis of surface elements will be carried out by means of the ESCA method. Vickers hardness, flexural strength and color stability will also be assessed. (AU)
