Abstract

Mansonella ozzardi (Manson, 1897) is a nematode of the Onchocercidae family and it represents one of the eight species of filaria that infects mostly human beings. Since its discovery on the first half of the 20th Century, very little has been said about its pathogenicity. In the middle of the 40's, Brazilian authors, after conducting many surveys to check on the incidence of human Filariosis in Manaus, described the parasite for the first time and, in the 50's and 60's, studied its prevalence in many Amazonian states and in many countries of South and Central America, questioning its pathogenicity and treatment. This study originated after diagnosing 40 patients infected with Mansonella ozzardi during the execution of the FAPESP Project 2007/00531-5 in the municipality of Lábrea, Amazonas state. Presently, Invermectin has been empirically used in the treatment of Mansonelosis, based on the analogous experience of its use in the treatment of Onchocerciasis. There is no controlled study to measure the effectiveness and/or occurrence of collateral effects related to the use of Invermectin to treat M. ozzardi infections. (AU)
