Abstract

This project deals with the R&D of Polymer Light Emitting Devices(PLEDs), Organic Solar Cells(CSOs), Organic Thin-Film Transistors(OTFTs) and sensors based on conjugated polymers. In a great measure, the project is a continuation of the Project FAPESP 03/07454-5 which has resulted in several M.Sc. dissertations and Ph.D. thesis, as related by our project reports and synthesized in this new project. In this new phase of the GEM group (Grupo de Eletrônica Molecular), thin-films of different conjugated polymers, like poly(p-phenilenevinylidene) and derivatives, polyfluorene, polythiophene, as well as other polymeric hosts with rare earth and transition metal complexes will be deposited by different techniques like spin-coating, casting, ink-jet and self-assembly so as to be used as active elements in organic electronic devices. Morphology and chemical structure of the films will be characterized by UV-Vis and FT-IR spectroscopy, photoluminescence, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The thin-film electrical properties will be investigated by alternating and direct current electrical conductivity measurements. In the case of films for LED devices, light emission intensity so to obtain figure of merit of luminous efficacy (hL, in cd/A), luminous power efficiency (hP, in lm/W) and the external quantum efficiency (EQE). LEDs and solar cells will be produced in a controlled atmosphere chamber to avoid the degradation problems associated with the conjugated polymers when exposed to the open ambient. Emphasis will be put on the White LED emission for the enormous potential they offer to substitute the conventional fluorescent and incandescent bulbs lighting. With this Project it is expected to obtain polymeric electronic devices with controlled properties, more efficient and with a longer useful life. Moreover, it is expected to better understand the injection mechanisms, transport and recombination of the charge carriers on those materials. (AU)
