Abstract

Atol das Rocas Biological Reserve (03°45'- 03°56' S; 33° 37'- 33°56'W) holds the biggest population of seabirds of Brazil. The seabirds are vulnerable to many pollutants such as: petroleum and their derivatives, persistent organic pollutants, and the anthropogenic solid residues. The pollution by solid residues, mainly plastic has been causing the decrease of several species of seabirds' populations. The region where Atol das Rocas is located is not free from the presence of those pollutants, which affect even remote regions as oceanic islands. The seabirds are much sensitive to the environmental changes and therefore are commonly used to monitor the ocean pollution. The aim of this proposal is the evaluation of the occurrence and levels of organic contaminants in birds of the Atol das Rocas Biological Reserve, and the identification and quantification of the anthropogenic solid residues and its influence on the local biota.
