Adipocytokines in periodontally-healthy and chronic periodontitis obese subjects

Abstract

Currently, obesity has been considered a risk indicator for periodontal diseases. However, the biological mechanisms associated with this phenomenon were not totally elucidated. Therefore, the aim of this study will be to evaluate the levels of adipocytokines [adiponectin, leptin, resistin, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alfa and interleukin (IL)-6] in the gingival crevicular fluid and serum from chronic periodontitis or periodontally-healthy obese subjects. Eighty subjects will be enrolled in this study: obese subjects presenting chronic periodontitis (n=20), periodontally-healthy obese subjects (n=20), normal body mass index (BMI) subjects presenting chronic periodontitis (n=20) periodontally-healthy normal BMI subjects (n=20). The subjects will be submitted to periodontal clinical examination and gingival crevicular fluid and serum sampling. Fluid and serum samples will be evaluated by the presence of adiponectin, leptin, resistin, TNF-± and IL-6 by ELISA. Statistical analysis will be performed according to data normality by ANOVA or Kruskal Wallis Teste, using a significance level of 5%. (AU)
