Analysis of wind generators impact connected to electrical energy systems

Abstract

The conversion of the energy available in the wind to electricity, which is called wind power, is the fastest growing energy source in the world. Although this growing interest over wind power is mainly due the fact that it is a clean and renewable energy resource, the increase in the number of wind generators has been enabled, in fact, by the development of new and more efficient wind energy conversion technologies. Currently, the latest wind energy conversion technologies have the aim to minimize the impacts of the wind intermittence on the electrical variables and to improve the energy efficiency in the conversion process. In order to accomplish such aim, different electrical generator configurations connected to different wind turbines have been proposed to wind power. However, the advent of new technologies demands new techniques for analyzing the impacts of the connection of these generators to the electrical grid. In this context, this project proposes the development of the impact analysis of the connection of wind generators to the electrical grid. These analyses should consider the main problems that may occur due to the operation of wind generators and the behavior of these generators when the electrical grid is subjected to disturbances. As a result of such analyses, it will be proposed control and operation strategies for these generators taking into consideration the generator technology and the technical requirements implemented by the system operator or by the electric distribution companies.
