Abstract

Callichthyidae comprises a well-corroborated monophyletic group, belonging to the superfamily Loricarioidea, which is divided in two subfamilies: Corydoradinae and Callichthyinae, also considered monophyletic based on morphological and molecular characters. All the genera of the family are considering monophyletic, with the exception of Corydoras. The relationship among genera of subfamilies are different when the morphological and molecular data are compared. For example, the molecular data suggest that the genera Dianema is the sister group of all other Callichthyinae, whereas in the phylogenies based on morphological data, the most basal genera is Callichthys. Several studies have been demonstrating that the reproductive characters of the fish species constitute another source of phylogenetic information, and must be better explored. Considering the potential of applicability of these informations in phylogenetics studies, the present study intends, through the anatomo-histological analysis and ultrastructural of male reproductive system of representatives of all genera of Callichthyidae, to test the hypothesis of that Callichthyidae is monophyletic, as well as yours subfamilies and also to test available hypotheses about the relationships among its genera. With the obtained data a major set of characters will be available for Callichthyidae, and we intent to evaluate the degree of variability of these reproductive masculine characters regarding the diversity of species of the group. Subsequently, these results will serve as a base to produced hypotheses on the phylogeny of the Loricarioidea, as well as among these and the Siluriformes as a whole. (AU)
