Low level laser therapy in the regeneration of rats tibias submitted to ionizing radiation

Low Level laser therapy (LLLT) on the bone unleashes cellular increase, both qualitative and quantitative, and accelerates the regeneration process. Few studies are existing in order to evaluate the action of LLLT over the bone submitted to ionizing radiation (IR). The aim of the present study is to assess the effects of LLLT on the repair bone process in tibias of rats that underwent IR. 72 Wistar EPM rats were distributed at random in four groups: Group I - Sham control (18 tibias); Group II - Laser irradiated (18 tibias); Group III - Irradiated with IR (18 tibias); Group IV - Irradiated with IR radiation and laser (18 tibias). The animals from groups III and IV will be irradiated with IR in a single dose of 30 GY. Exact 28 days after the IR, a surgical monocortical perforation of 2,5mm of diameter will be made in the tibias with proper motor and drills under irrigation. In Groups II and IV, 3 laser applications will be performed (AsGaAL, 100 mW, 808mm, 2J energy). The first one right after the suture, the second one after 48 hours, and the third one 96 hours after the surgical procedure. From the day of the surgery on, the animals will undergo euthanasia, after 7, 14 and 21 days. The material collected will be adequately processed for a histomorphometrical analysis of the quantity of neoformed bone. (AU)
