This proposal concerns the detailed study and further development of new methods for the production of microstructured surfaces and an enhanced process performance by grinding with circumferentially microstructured grinding wheels. In a first step, the effective kinematic contact conditions for grinding processes using such tools will be described. Furthermore, the influence of the grinding wheel microstructure design and the process parameters on the workpiece surface and subsurface characteristics and the process stability will be analyzed. The influence of the tool wear on the microstructure geometry and the process limits will be evaluated. At last, the impact of the grinding process and the machine kinematics on the workpiece surface and subsurface properties will be investigated for two different grinding processes. The generation of microstructures on the workpiece surface will be investigated at the LOPF using external cylindrical grinding. The increase in the process performance by grinding with microstructured grinding wheels will be investigated in experimental studies at the IFW using peripheral surface grinding. (AU)
