Terra firme stream fish from Rio Machado Basin, RO

Abstract

Streams are considered special environments because they harbor species of small fish that generally correspond to approximately 50% of all described freshwater fish species of South America, showing high degree of endemism. This project was designed in order to fill gaps in knowledge of the fish fauna of rio Machado basin, Rondônia state, an important Amazon river basin prone to exhibit high diversity and endemism, but also exposed to various activities that cause changes to their habitats. Four goals were established: a) determine the taxonomic composition and percentage contribution of each taxon to the total number of individuals and biomass of collected fish, b) assess the feeding biology of fishes, c) build a database of environmental information of each segment; d) develop identification keys to the fish fauna, e) organize voucher collections. Six of 13 sub-basins that make up the rio Machado (80,600 km2) drainage will be randomly selected; in each one from six to ten stream reaches will be chosen in order to include from 50 to 60 stream stretches. The selection of sample stretches - with 80 m in length - will be made in order to obtain segments with comparable volume and physical structure. The collection effort will be standardized and evaluated by richness estimators, the feeding biology will be investigated by techniques for study of gastric contents, and information on the spatial distribution of microhabitats will be obtained through naturalistic observations, conditioned to adequate underwater visibility conditions.
