Interdependence and political cooperation: un voting

Abstract

The main question this project addresses is the relationship between interdependence and political cooperation in international organizations. More especifically, it analyses how the degree of interdependence among countries influences their behavior in international institutions, in particular in the United Nations. The hypothesis to be tested is that countries with a high degree of interdependence tend to vote together at the UN General Assembly more frequently than countries with a lower degree of interdependence. The contributions this research aims to offer are: formulate a broader measure of interdependence than the usually seen in the literature (mainly related to bilateral trade) and to classify UN voting according to the main themes at the UN (Security and National Defense, Trade and International Economy, Human Rights, Environment, Migration, Health and others) and other characteristics such as number of abstentions and polarization among groups of countries. The objective is to understand the behavior of some countries in a multilateral environment with respect to different themes using the interdependence concept as a guide. (AU)
