Abstract

Brazil is the worldwide leading producer of sugarcane and exportation of sugar and alcohol. With the prospect of doubling the growing area of this grass and use of more productive varieties, rich in sucrose and susceptible to sugarcane borer Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius) (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), ecological studies about tactics that can help are important, complementing and increasing the action of natural agents to control the sugarcane borer. The fertilization of plants with silicon can promote resistance to insect pests, increasing the thickness of tissue, promoting physical barrier, contributing significantly to reduce the damage caused and the feeding activity of these arthropods. This research aims to study the interaction silicon (Si), D. saccharalis and Cotesia flavipes (Cameron) in the sugarcane crop, expecting to prove the efficacy of this nutrient in the resistance increase to this pest and its positive interaction with that natural enemy. The effect of Si on plant growth and yield of cultivars IAC-862480 (resistant to sugarcane borer) and SP-911099 (susceptible to sugarcane borer) will be evaluated, on the intensity of infestation of sugarcane borer and on the parasitism of this lepidopterous by C. flavipes in these cultivars. The results of these studies will be presented in technical and scientific events, through submission of abstracts and panels at conferences, lectures, seminars and courses. (AU)
