Clinical, laboratory and haemogasometric study of urolithiasis in sheep

Abstract

The high incidence of ovine struck by obstructive urolithiasis makes the study of this disease necessary and up-to-date. The basic pH and the male anatomy of the urinary tract are pointed as predisposition factors for the disease. Previous studies have proved the efficiency and the practicality of the ammonium chloride in the reduction of the urinary pH. However, the studies put in evidence the higher incidence of uroliths after the interruption of the treatment. This project has the objective of setting up an experimental model for the study of the urolithiasis in ovine. More specifically, it is intended to test this model through clinical and lab evaluations (urinalysis, hemogasometry, serum urea and creatinine), and ultrasound exam, beside that identification of the types of stones (chemical analysis). One hundred male ovine, between the ages 3 and 6 months, will be used. They will be distributed into three groups at random: Group I (n = 40) - oral administration of 10g of ammonium chloride/animal/day during 21 consecutive days, interruption after the 22nd day and observation of the animals up to the 42nd day; Group II (n = 40) - oral administration of 10g of ammonium chloride/animal/day during 42 consecutive days; Group III (n = 20) - control, animals not treated preventively with ammonium chloride, observed during the 42 days of the experiment. The Moments (M) of clinical evaluation and collection of the material will be defined as: M0 - immediately before the beginning of the experiment and at intervals of seven days at the moments M1; M2; M3; M4; M5 and M6. Besides the clinical exam, urine and blood samples will be collected from all the animals, at the different moments, for urinalysis, hemogasometry and dosages of urea and creatinine. The animals will be evaluated clinically by urethral and urinary bladder ultrasound, and if the diagnosis is confirmed, they will be submitted to clinical and/or surgical treatment. The stones will be sent for chemical analysis. The statistical analysis, as well as the choice by the tests, will be performed based on the presuppositions determined by the results and by the variables, by adopting p < 0.05 for the statistical significance.
