Abstract

Bloodstream infections (BSI) are characterized as an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Besides, infections are also responsible for the increase in antimicrobial resistance rates. The purpose of this study is to continue the Project SCOPE Brazil (extension of a study conducted by Virginia Commonwealth University, USA, called SCOPE - Surveillance and Control of Pathogens of Epidemiological Importance), which was conducted from July 2008 to July 2009 in 16 Brazilian's Hopitals distributed in five different regions (North, Northeast, South, Southeast and Midwest). We assessed the epidemiologic and microbiological tests from the first bloodstream infection episode reported as nosocomial in patients admitted to hospitals. We first have studied 1787 microorganisms isolated from bloodstream infection. Besides epidemiological analysis, we have performed molecular and specific microbiological tests for characterization of resistance mechanisms.The Project aims to continue the microbiological and molecular study of 458 microorganisms that were not analyzed in the first phase of the Brazilian Scope Project and, through advanced molecular techniques, better characterize the resistance mechanisms to antimicrobials of these isolatesThis project also intend to maintain this surveillance study with the actual Brazilian network of hospitals and with with new partnerships with other public and private Brazilian hospitals.
