Abstract

This is a randomized controlled trial, whose main objective is to assess the impact of family-centered social support program of care for people with diabetes mellitus. The analysed variables will be: fasting plasma glucose, glycated hemoglobin, triglycerides, total cholesterol and fractions, microalbuminuria, body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, perceived self-efficacy, knowledge about the disease, and adherence to self-care activities, perceived stress, coping, acceptance of illness, frequency of blood glucose monitoring and perceived social support. The sample will be constituted according to the criteria of inclusion / exclusion. The randomization of participants will be accomplished through the technique of stratified allocation. Two groups will be composed with similar characteristics related to sex and age. In those two groups will be developed the topics of Diabetes Mellitus Conversation Maps, based on Social Cognitive Theory. In the intervention group, there is the involvement of a relative/caregiver, indicated aby the participants to be a source of social support. Intervention at the relative/caregiver will consist of the approach of themes developed in the educational program through telephone calls recorded, according to protocol established by the principles and communication techniques of Motivational Interviewing. The statistical procedures will be accomplished in line with the study design. The comparison between the intervention and control groups will be conducted through the Student t test or Mann-Whitney. For comparisons between two dependent samples will be used paired t-test and Wilcoxon test. (AU)
