Abstract

In this project, we propose the investigation of environrnental memories of the north coast ofSão Paulo, between two periods of Brazilian history: 1937 (the time around the creation of national heritage/patrimony protective services) to the construction of the Rio-Santos Highway, and from the Rio-Santos Highway construction until today. The main purpose is to understand how relationships between humans and nature are placed in the field of memory, becoming symbolic references to the everyday negotiations between human beings and their multiple environrnents of belonginglliving. For the analysis of the environrnental memories two document categories will be investigated: the analysis of local heritage and oral sources. It is noteworthy that the research will be developed at the Environrnental Studies Center, in dialogue with the Fapesp project Urban growth, vulnerability and adaptation: social and ecological dimensions of climate change on the Coast of São Paulo. It is, however, a regular aid project for its own specific thematic and methodological issues (the study of heritage and oral sources, on the north coast region of São Paulo) that underlie the four components already established in the Project on Climate Change on the Coast of São Paulo.
