Abstract

This study aims to improve the conservation of bird species inside and outside nature reserves in cerrado. It aims to test the following hypotheses: 1) soybean plantations cause negative edge effects on populations of bird species that inhabit forests, savannas and grasslands located within reserves; 2) attributes of forest remnants (ex. width) and of the adjacent vegetation (ex. width of savanna) can influence the occurrence of bird species in forest remnants embedded in soybean plantations; 3) landscape changes can affect negatively bird movements within territories as well as the natal and reproductive dispersal of some species. Other species with higher mobility, such as Orthopsittaca manilata, use resources located in more than one nature reserve and in adjacent non-protected areas. This project will be conducted during four years. Field work will occur between September 2005 and December 2008, mainly in Goiás and in cerrado north-eastern region. Birds will be counted by the area search method in quadrates set in reserves and remnants. Birds will be captured and ringed; the movement (within territories and dispersal) within the mosaics of vegetation will be analyzed. Individuals of the species O. manilata will receive radio-transmitters. The data resulting from surveys will be analyzed using mainly Generalized Linear Models (GLIM). (AU)
