Risk assessment for the rabies virus circulation in Sao Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract

The present work shows a qualitative approach to evaluate the risk of rabies virus circulation in domestic herbivore population in Paraíba do Sul River Valley, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. Scenario trees will be built, according to rabies exposure and diffusion, in order to estimate rabies occurrence in the herbivore population. This probability will be associated to geographic location of farms, and high-risk areas will be priorized when the implementation of control measures from the National Program of Herbivore Rabies Control (from the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply) take place. To reach this objective, a partnership between the Department of Preventive Veterinary Medicine and Animal Health (FMVZ-USP), the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply and the Official Veterinary Service of Sao Paulo State was reached.
