The mortality of patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), even after adjustment for traditional risk factors, is 10 to 20 times greater than the general population, mainly as a consequence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The chronic inflammatory state is one of the most important nontraditional risk factors for general and cardiovascular mortality. The relationship between CKD and inflammation is established since the early stages of renal disease. Inflammation is a recognized causal factor for the development and acceleration of atherosclerotic disease. Inflammatory biomarkers, such as interleucin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are associated with atherosclerosis and mortality in CKD patients. Furthermore, the association between inflammation, oxidative stress and protein-energy wasting seems to have a synergistic effect in the development of accelerated atherosclerosis in CKD patients.Coronary arteries calcification is present in almost exclusively in coronary artery disease (CAD); however in CKD patients are one exception, since these patients could present media (non-atherosclerotic) calcification. Therefore in CKD the association between coronary calcification and CAD is not clear, and the value of calcium score as a predictor of cardiac events is not fully established. Specific aims: To evaluate the association between inflammatory and nutritional parameters as well as the coronary calcium score with the morbimortality (all-cause and cardiovascular) in patients with chronic kidney disease.
