Abstract

This research project proposes a paleoenvironmental interdisciplinary study since the late Pleistocene for the Espírito Santo coast, southeastern Brazil. One of the study sites comprises the northern region of Espírito Santo State, municipalities of Linhares and Sooretama, where Atlantic forest reserves occur. Two approaches that seek to explain the current vegetation diversity will be studied: the refuges theory, which is related to the history of local evolution and extinction, and the past connection with the Amazon. Savanna vegetation occurs around the forest on Spodosols, whose study of the origin and development is proposed, in addition to the forest - savanna vegetation dynamics. The mangrove dynamics also will be studied and by inference of its presence and of other marine indicators, it is intended to verify the continental extent of Holocene marine transgression. It is also proposed to analyze both the influence of marine fluctuations on the dynamics of human occupation and the influence of anthropogenic activities on vegetation dynamics. Studies with vermetid incrustations will be developed in Guarapari, about 180 km South of the forest reserves, with the objective to obtain the variation curves of the relative sea level and of the ´ 13C and ´18O for the last ~8000 years. By the comparison of these results with isotopic data of vermetids from other Brazilian coastal areas, it is proposed to elaborate a model for the changes in the oceanic circulation for the late Holocene and associated climate changes. All of these studies will support inferences about climatic fluctuations since the late Pleistocene to the Espírito Santo coast, whose data are important for the development and optimization of paleoclimate models to the Brazilian southeastern region.
