Abstract
Studies of reactive species in biological systems, implicated in vital or pathological processes are focused in this project. The design, preparation and isolation of those species as free compounds or inserted in suitable inorganic matrices, forming functional materials will be provided. Those species include antioxidant or oxidant compounds, polymers, chelating agents, and respective metal complexes. Their reactivity in processes, where they could act as pharmacological or medicinal agents, will be investigated. Appropriate methodologies for their detection and identification, as well as for their transport, recognition by specific targets and toxicity evaluation will be developed. Experimental data will be rationalized by theoretical calculations, trying to set up or suggest more efficient species. (AU)
