Cancer stem cell in locally advanced breast cancer

Abstract

Breast cancer is the leading cause of malignancy among women worldwide. In Brazil, about 50% of patients present with locally advanced or metastatic disease at the diagnostic. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy has been used as the standard treatment. The pathological response to therapy is an important prognostic factor. Only 20% of patients achieve complete pathological response and do benefit from neoadjuvant therapy in terms of overall survival. Identify prognostic factors of response can optimize the response rate, reduce the cost and adverse effect of treatment. The presence of cancer stem cells (CSCs) within solid tumors has been reported as the cause of tumor heterogeneity and resistance to therapy. Notwithstanding, the CSCs are able to generate tumors at distant organs. Thus, the quantity or the quality of CSCs within the primary tumor could be predictive of response to therapy. Identify and genotype this population of cells is a novel opportunity for response prediction in locally advanced breast cancer and open new perspective to target therapy. The objective of this study is to analyze the CSCs population and some MRI parameters correlating with pathological response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer patients. (AU)
