Abstract

The iodinated contrast agents are substances capable of improving radiodense the resolution of images obtained in radiological examinations. The contrast agent "ideal" should not produce any adverse reaction, but unfortunately, this substance does not exist yet. For this reason it is essential that physicians be alert regarding prescription of these agents. The kidneys excrete, by glomerular filtration, 99% of contrast agents, the remainder being eliminated by the liver, bile, intestine, sweat, tears and saliva. The incidence of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) in patients with previous normal function is approximately 3% for the general population and 20% for populations at risk, when no measure is used, the RCN is placed as the third leading cause of renal dysfunction in a hospital setting, surpassed only by hypotension and postoperative complications. The development of renal failure prolongs hospitalization and increases the total cost of hospitalization. The main objective of this study is to assess renal function in cancer patients who underwent CT before and after use of iodinated contrast media hiposmolar by serum creatinine and compare the incidence rates of CIN. This study also aims to demonstrate through demographic and clinical risk factors for CIN in cancer population, subjected to the administration of iodinated contrast hiposmolar. (AU)
