Abstract

Fungi have been exploited for the enzyme production due to the facility to secrete large amounts of proteins in the extracellular medium. Many enzymes are used in different industrial processes which, considering the annual growth of the enzyme market, has stimulated studies on the search of new microbial strains and on the development of new production processes. Xylanases and b-xylosidases are the main enzymes involved in the degradation of xylan, the second main component of the plant cell wall, and they can be used in many processes in the food and beverages, feed, textile and pulp and paper industries. A Penicillium janczewskii strain isolated from Brazilian soil was studied in relation to the optimal conditions for xylanase and b-xylosidase production. The objective of this work is to purify, characterize the main biochemical properties of these enzymes and also apply them in the biobleaching process of cellulose pulp. This way, this project can also be inserted in a current context aiming to reduce the environmental pollution. (AU)
