Prospecting of biological activity of vegetable and fruits phenolic extracts: antiproliferative and antioxidant activity

Abstract

Regular consumption of fruits and vegetables has been consistently shown to be associated with health-promoting. These properties are assigned to several classes of phytochemical, including phenolic compounds. Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells multiple factors, and it is suggested that phenolic compounds can act in different signaling pathways reducing the risk of its development. On the other hand, the structural variety of phenolic compounds, the complexities of food composition and the several mehanism of action make it difficult to identify foods or groups of foods with possible chemopreventive activity and rational use of these sources in the diet. The aim of this project is the evaluation of antioxidant and antiproliferative activity of vegetables and fruits and identification of possible compounds responsible for this effect. The preliminary evidence of these properties by in vitro methods could provide data for the selection of possible candidates, food or phenolic compounds, for further investigation in animals models and its mechanism of action and bioavailability, allowing inferences between intake of bioactive compounds and the health-promoting.
