Abstract

Excessive alcohol consumption and its consequences arising from their use have reached alarming proportions around the world. Researches have focused on the morphological and functional changes of ethanol upon the male reproductive system, however most studies remain inconclusive when regarding to the possible inflammatory effects caused by the ethanol in several tissues, include reproductive. The prostate is hormone-dependent, in which is regulated mainly by androgens and estrogens. Several factors, such as aging and obesity, promote hormonal disturbances triggering inflammatory reactions. Ethanol itself causes a decrease of testosterone concentration, but it is still unknown the inflammatory repercussions on the prostate. Therefore, this study aims to examine the ethanol action on the expression of inflammatory proteins and hormone receptors as well as assessing the effects of hormone replacement with testosterone on these parameters in the UChB rat prostate. The prostate structure, immunohistochemistry and receptor expression for AR (androgen receptor), ER± (estrogen receptor ±), ER² (estrogen receptor ²), inflammatory markers (Interleucin (IL)-6, IL-10, tumoral necrosis factor (TNF)-± and transforming growth factor (TGF)-²1), cell proliferation (Ki-67), apoptosis (TUNNEL), hormone measurement (total and free testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, estradiol and prolactin) will be evaluated. This study will provide new insights into the research area developed at the Department of Anatomy (IBB / UNESP) by the research team in Biology of Reproduction. (AU)
