Abstract

The Cerrado biome is the second largest biome in South America and covers an area of approximately 22% of Brazilian territory. This biome has national and international relevance in terms of the biodiversity and water resources. Despite the importance of biome, researches with greater detail about the dynamics of water balance and soil erosion weren´t achieved to evaluate the replacement of native cover by agricultural areas. Thus, we intend to conduct an analytical study of the main components of water balance and soil erosion processes in native forest area representative of Cerrado biome, allowing the evaluation of this biome in the face of current conditions of changing land use. So, we intend to study with detail all components of water balance and soil erosion on experimental plots under natural rainfall, located at forest native area of the Cerrado biome in Itirapina, SP. We expect to obtain the following aspects: (i) information that can help the conservation of the Cerrado; (ii) input data for modeling process of the hydrological cycle and soil loss in the Cerrado; (iii) calibration of erosion models for the study area; and (iv) analysis space-time of the impacts of deforestation of native Cerrado areas in the water balance and in the intensification of erosion processes. So, all information generated will provide better understanding of the dynamics of the Cerrado to help the decision making process about measures of the forest and land use management. (AU)
