CAD-CAM systems: precision evaluation of data acquisition and milling equipment

Abstract

Objective: 1. Evaluate the influence of three data acquisition system on the marginal fit of CAD-CAM-made crown and bridge cores: a) iTero intra-oral system; b) Cerec BlueCam intra-oral system; c) conventional optic scanner; and 2. Evaluate the accuracy of cores milled in two different equipments: a) Sistema Conexao; b) Cerec InLab. Methodology: A stainless-steel master die will be made, to simulate a three elements bridge. Two external hexagon implants (platform 4.1mm from Conexao) will be place in an epoxy block, simulating a clinical situation of three elements. A PVS impression will be taken of each system and, from them, stone dies. The prep dimensions of the two systems will be transferred to the software as follow (n=10): 1) Direct digital impression using iTero (cadent); 2) Direct digital impression using Cerec BluCam (Sirona); and 3) Scanning of the cast by optical scanner 3s (DWOS). Ten files will be obtained for each system (prep profile and implant position). The DWOS software will be used to design 60 structures prototypes (30 for each condition). The structures will be milled by Conexao CAD/CAM system and the Cerec BlueCam impression will be sent to Cerec InLab for milling. The cores for the teeth-supported bridges will be milled in Zirconia blocks, and the cores for implant -supported bridges will be milled in Cr-CO alloy. The control group will include 10 conventional structures using UCLA abutment with CR-CO belt for the implant-supported system and 10 Ni-Cr structures conventionally made for the teeth-supported system. The marginal gap of 90 structures will be measured in 12 points using a tridimensional optic microscope (Roi, RAM Optical Instrumentation, CA 92606, Irvine) with a digital stage, 250x and 1 ¼m accuracy. After that, the structures will be sectioned in the connection point and the single-crown core marginal gap will be measured. The statistically significant difference, over the initial hypothesis of similarity will be tested by ANOVA . Tukey test will be use to check the interaction of the results, complemented by graphs of the means. (AU)
