Abstract

Phacoemulsification is the surgical treatment most commonly performed and accepted for cataracts. The use of artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is indicated to achieve emetropy and as an aid on the profilaxis of posterior capsule opacification. However, its use might induce intraocular contamination, among other problems. Contamination from nasal cavity or palpebral conjunctiva may also occur. Previous studies reported negative results for microbiological culture of ocular discharges. However, contradictory results were obtained once the samples were analysed by polymeraze chain reaction (PCR). Considering that intraocular contamination is possible during surgical procedures and that PCR is an useful tool for the identification and origin of contaminants, this study will evaluate the contamination aspects of the aqueous humor and its correlation to palpebral conjunctiva and nasal cavity following phacoemulsification and IOL implantation in dogs.
