Microbiological evaluation of periodontal and implant-related sites in titanium and zirconia abutments using the DNA Checkerboard method and 16S rDNA-based PCR

Abstract

Molecular diagnostic methods using genetic material have been largely employed to detect and quantify species harbouring the oral cavity. The aim of this study will be to evaluate the microbial composition of subgingival biofilm from teeth and implants sulci in relation to contents originated from internal parts of the implant and abutments fabricated in titanium or zirconia. Twenty partially edentulous healthy patients will be enrolled in this study. Bacterial counts and percentage of colonized sites will be evaluated using the DNA checkerboard method and 16S rDNA-based PCR. Pearson's correlation tests will be performed to investigate the correlation between microbial counts from the subgingival dental biofilm and the biofilm from implant, abutments, and implant prosthesis.
