Works of war: the French musical production during the years of World War

Abstract

This paper is a significant part of my doctoral thesis carried out between 2005 and 2008 in the Music Department at ECA/USP title Tombeau of Couperin (1914 - 1917) Maurice Ravel: a work of War." The research was supported by FAPESP under the guidance of Professor. Dr. Amilcar Zani Netto. The project to develop this work is originated from the strong wish to continuing my masters research "The production of Claude Debussy's piano during the First World War," held this same institution, between 2000 and 2002, also provided by FAPESP. The main goal of this work focuses the exacerbate historical moment by French composers in the European issues of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and the consequences of this reality in the musical production of the period in question, focusing mainly the work for solo piano Le Tombeau de Couperin the French composer Maurice Ravel. The research was based on documentation collected through field research, which took place in France in important collections as the Bibliotheque Nationale de France - BNF, where it was possible to examine manuscripts, interviews and publications in newspapers of the time, correspondence and records. The BNF has allowed the reproduction of some documents, still unpublished, which represents a substantial part of the work. (AU)
