Sustainable use of biodiversity in Atlantic Forest remnants in São Paulo: evaluation, isolation and molecular characterization of bioactive secondary metabolites in plant species

Abstract

In the present project will be selected plant species that occur in the remaining areas of Atlantic Forest of São Paulo, considered a hotspot because of the wide diversity of vegetation and the need for conservation and sustainable use. This project has as main objective the pharmacological studies, isolation and structural determination of active compounds, and the establishment of relationships structure / biological activity with the compounds obtained from plant matrices. Therefore, species belonging to different plant families will be collected and their extracts are prepared and are then subjected to a series of bioassays in order to select those with potential biological activity, particularly antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal), antiprotozoal (antimalarial, anti-leishmania and trypanocidal), antitumoral and at glycemic methabolism. Then the promising extracts will be fractionated, the active metabolites purified by chromatographic techniques and their structures determined by spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques. After isolation of active substances, they may be subjected to tests of SAR through different molecular changes in order to find pharmacophore groups. Moreover, they are taken their volatile oils, which are chemically analyzed and subjected to the evaluation of biological potential. Thus, this project aims to add new compounds and / or extracts with proven pharmacological activity restricted to the herbal therapeutic, providing tools for sustainable development in areas at risk of extinction.
