Abstract
The norhteastern region of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, concentrates the most relevant remnants of Cerrado vegetation; however, these remnants are immersed in a landscape strongly dominated by intensive agriculture and plantation forest. The survival of mammals with specialized feeding habits and that occur in low densities is particularly worrying. One of such species that still survives in this region is the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), a taxon endangered with extinction not only regionally but also nationally and internationally. The objective of this project is to determine the occupancy of Cerrado remnants and surrounding landscapes in the proximity of Ribeirão Preto city by this species, identifying the main environmental factors influencing this occupancy. Data will be collected using camera trap protocols and footprint records in four areas and surrounding landscapes: one strictly protected reserve (Jataí Ecological Station); two areas of preservation owned by a Paper and Celulose company (International Paper do Brasil), and an area of planted forest administered by the Instituto Florestal (Cajuru State Forest). The analysis will be based in the estimation of the occupancy probability through the program PRESENCE. The main question to be answered is: are the giant anteaters occupying the areas of preservation surrounded by Pinus/Eucalyptus in a similar way as the landscape of the strictly protected reserve? Answering this question will facilitate the elaboration of a more efficient conservation strategy for the species, given that the preservation of the ecological processes and the endangered species cannot be based solely on the conservation provided by protected areas.
