Abstract

The Nhecolândia sub-region, located in the central southern portion of the Pantanal wetland, is distinguished by the existence of about 7000 fresh water lakes (baías) and 1500 alkaline-saline lakes (salinas), respectively associated with temporary channels (vazantes) and sand hills (cordilheiras). The high geochemical variability of waters associated with baías/vazantes and salinas/cordilheiras geomorphological systems suggests the occurrence of soils with great differences of physical, chemical, and/or mineralogical properties in the Nhecolândia sub-region. The few available data on literature, mostly based on field information, already pointed out different soil classes, but also showed clear similarities between saline soils typically found around saline lakes, and soils associated with cordilheiras, vazantes and baías. The goal of this proposal is to perform a detailed characterization of Nhecolândia soils, in order to identify the main pedological processes responsible for their genesis and current dynamics. Based on pedological and geomorphological available data, we assume the hypothesis that part of the soils of cordilheiras, baías and vazantes is originating from destruction of saline soils due to transformation of salinas into baías/vazantes. Detailed survey and sampling of soils will be conducted along toposequences. Soil samples will be submitted to physical, chemical, micromorphological, mineralogical (X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, synthesis experiments), and sequential extractions analyses. Water will be sampled along the studied toposequences and submitted to chemical analyses, in order to identify genetic relationships with the studied soils. (AU)
