Oral health conditions in children under 5 years of age in Diadema (SP) between 1997 and 2012

Abstract

The objectives of the present study is to assess the oral health conditions regarding dental caries, traumatic dental injuries and erosive lesions, and also to know the trend of this problems in the children population under 5 years of age, who live in Diadema - Sao Paulo. This study aims also to know which factors are related to these problems and which is the impact of oral health conditions on the quality of life of the affected children. To do that, in the year 2012 an epidemiological study on oral health will be carried out to evaluate the data on habits and quality of life in young children. The intra-oral clinical exams and the recollection of the data will be performed during the National Campaign of Multi-vaccination for children in the city of Diadema, Sao Paulo following the same methodology of previous studies (Bönecker et al.,2010). The representative sample for the study will be determined with the Kirkwood formula (1988), and must be approximately of 1200 children. The children will be selected in a systematic way during the waiting line for vaccination. The informed consent, free and clarified will be signed by the legal responsible of the participants. The children will be examined in 16 health centers by 16 dentists previously trained. The epidemiological indexes that will be used are ceo-s (Gruebbel, 1944) for caries lesions, Andreasen et al., (2007) for traumatic dental injuries and O´Brien (1994) for dental erosions. The trend of oral health problems will be assessed from the epidemiological data obtained in the 2012 study compared to other seven cross-sectional previous studies. Trained community agents will collect the socio-economic data (Jarman, 1983), children´s habits (Murakami, 2009) and the quality of life data by the instrument ECOHIS (Pahel, Rozier, Slade, 2007).
