Abstract

Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) may improve the nasal respiratory pattern. This study will be performed to evaluate the effects of RME on nasal cavity by acoustic rhinometry, computed rhinomanometry and cone beam volume computerized tomography. The use of cone beam computed tomography is due to low exposure to radiation compared with conventional tomography and this will allow a three-dimensional evaluation of the nasal cavity. Thirty children with predominantly mouth breathing, ranging in age from 7 to 10 years, with mixed dentition and maxillary atresia with posterior crossbite will be selected. All subjects will be submited to acoustic rhinometry, computed rhinomanometry, orthodontic documentation consisting of 5 shots (front, profile, and three intraoral photographs: front, right side and left side), plaster casts of dental arches, cone beam volume computerized tomography of maxilla and upper airways at two different times: before expansion and 120 days after expansion. In 360 days after expansion, the children will be submited to acoustic rhinometry and computed rhinomanometry. All data obtained in four stages will be analyzed and compared statistically by Statitics Department at UNICAMP in order to examine the real influence of rapid maxillary expansion on nasal cavity and respiratory pattern.
