This is a proposal for a research grant to support the activities of the High Energy experimental group of the Instituto de Física Gleb Wataghin (IFGW) at the University of Campinas. The UNICAMP group is an official member of the ALICE experiment at LHC/CERN and also the STAR experiment at RHIC/BNL. These are Heavy Ion Collider experiments dedicated to study the characteristics of matter under extreme conditions of energy and density, and probe the QCD phase diagram. These experiments are operated by large international collaborations and take data at the CERN Laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, and at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, in NY, USA. In this proposal, we include the grant request to support working missions to the above laboratories for data taking and also participation in collaboration meetings. To aid the development of this field of research at UNICAMP, we also plan to organize a once a year workshop dedicated to this field in Campinas. In these workshops, recent results from the LHC and the development of specific analysis can be discussed, integrating researchers from the experiments with theoreticians and students. A small support for equipment such as computers and cooling system for the local data processing facility is also included in the proposal. Finally, the project also includes a proposal for publicizing the LHC research topics and recent results to the general public, targeted to the elementary and middle school. This would be done through the production of advertisement posters, and preparation of colloquiums to be distributed to the schools. (AU)
