Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis (CVL) is a zoonotical parasitic disease of great importance for public health and is caused by the protozoa Leishmania (L.) infantum (syn: L. (L.) chagasi) transmitted by sand fly bite of the specie Lutzomyia longipalpis. Leishmania species are intracellular macrophagic parasites from dogs, humans and many wild animal hosts that can cause the death of the hosts if without any treatment. The aim of the present work is a study of the prevalence of CVL in dogs, the distribution of Phlebotominae insects and the risk factor associated to canine infection in a rural area called "Cinturão Verde" from Ilha Solteira, SP, Brazil. The CVL diagnosis will be accomplished by parasitological, serologica (IFAT and ELISA) and molecular methods (PCR). The insects will be collected using a CDC light trap placed monthly around the houses. (AU)
