Abstract
The record of neotectonic activity has increased in northeastern Brazil. The Paraíba Basin was the last bridge connecting the Sulamerican and African plates, representing an area that remained longer tectonically active during the continental break up. Previous studies in this area have demonstrated strong tectonic control in deposits formed from the Miocene, being of interest for investigations aiming to reconstruct the post-rift tectonossedimentary history of the passive margin of the Southamerican plate. Despite this interest, styles and models of tectonic deformation for this basin remain to be presented. The present project has a multidisciplanary nature and aim to analyze post-rift deformation structures and the intensity of the tectonic deformation in the Paraíba Basin that could help to better understand the evolution of this passive margin. The methods proposed to approach this main goal include geomorphological, stratigraphic, sedimentologic analysis applying remote sensing data digital elevation model, radar), subsurface data (well logs, aeromagnetometric data), sedimentary facies, ichnofossiliferous assemblages, description of tectonic structures and of their directional trends, petrography and optically stimulated luminescence dating. The results derived from this project will allow quantivative and qualitative analysis, which will help to reconstruct the tectonossedimentary evolution of the Paraíba Basin, analyze of its correspondence with other tectonic events that have been recorded in other areas of Northeastern Brazil, as qell as to reconstruct the post-rift deformation patterns that might act in passive margins.
