Psychoative substance consumption among psychiatric patients: identification and analysis of comorbidity

The international literature indicates that the population that presents a psychiatric clinical condition constitutes a vulnerable group for the consumption of psychoactive substances. Brazilian studies draw attention to the peculiarities of the context that may influence the prevalence rates. In order to provide specialized and integral care, it is important to better understand this phenomenon and how it occurs in our reality. The aim of this project is to identify the consumption of psychoactive substances among individuals undergoing psychiatric treatment in two mental health services (outpatient and semi-hospitalized) of the municipality of Ribeirão Preto - SP. More specifically the aims are, to determine the frequency of consumption of psychoactive substances among these individuals, to relate socio-demographic and clinical factors with the consumption of psychoactive substances, to identify the psychiatric diagnoses related to substance consumption and to investigate the association between impulsivity and the consumption of psychoactive substances and, additionally, the social support network and the consumption of psychoactive substances among these patients. Thus, a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study will be carried out using a structured interview to collect socio-demographic and clinical information, the ASSIST instrument to screen the consumption of substances, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale to assess impulsivity and the MOS-SSS instrument (Medical Outcomes Study - Social Support Survey) to evaluate the social support network. The participants will be patients undergoing treatment in a psychiatric outpatient clinic and in a Psychosocial Care Center II of the municipality of Ribeirão Preto - SP. The criteria for inclusion in the study are: to be enrolled as a patient in the services selected and to use the services during the period of data collection; to be over 18 years of age; to be capable of providing information; and to agree to participate in the study. Patients of either gender will be eligible for inclusion. The data will be organized in a spreadsheet and then exported to a statistical application for analysis. Descriptive analysis will be performed first and then associations between categorical variables will be verified using the Fisher exact test, adopting a significance level of 5%. (AU)
