Abstract

The tilápia Oreochromis niloticus is widely distributed fish species in Brazil and is the most farmed among the Brazilian freshwater fishes. Currently, few programs on genetic breeding have been carried out in Brazil. Aiming at producing a tilápia strain that put together superior performance and red coloration, the present project intends to apply a breeding program using the Chitralada and the Red Stirling strains as well as to use molecular markers to monitor the crossbreeding, and identify possible GH markers to assist selection. The project will be done at the "Indústria Brasileira do Peixes Ltda." hatchery in Jundiaí (SP) and in the "Laboratório de Genética de Organismos Aquáticos e Aquicultura" (LAGOAA) at the University of Mogi das Cruzes (SP). Genetic variability analysis using microsatellites will be carried out with the parental strains and throughout the crossings. Crossbreeding will be done from 1/2 Chitralada and 1/2 Red Stirling to produce 3/4 Chitralada and 1/4 Red Stirling and then after blotching free culling the 7/8 Chitralada en 1/8 Red Stirling progeny. Simultaneously, intra-crossings within Chitralada and Red-Stirling parental strains will be done to produce contemporary progenies to compare to the crossbreedings. Data of farming performance will be recorded all over the progeny testing. Fin clipping of the crossbreeding progeny will be taken for DNA extraction to assess the polymorphism in the Intron I and promoter of the Growth Hormone Gene and associate it to the growth performance. The present proposal endeavors to develop methodologies for the tilapia genetic breeding and also to be applied to other Brazilian native farmed fish species. (AU)
