Abstract

We propose a program of research visit of Research Assistant Professor Alexandre Pakhomov from the University of Washington, Seattle, US, to the Institute of Physics Gleb Wataghin, UNICAMP, Campinas SP, for three months starting October 1, 2005. The research will be primarily directed at investigations of high temperature magnetic properties and their evolution (“magnetic spectroscopy”) in a dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) material Cr-doped AlN for future spintronic applications. These studies will lead to understanding of mechanisms of ferromagnetism in DMS. Recent discovery of ferromagnetism in Cr:AlN has attracted considerable interest due to the high Curie temperature and spontaneous magnetization, unconventional magnetic and transport behavior, as well as potential compatibility of this material with GaN-based electronics. As part of this Project, we suggest to present a proof that this wide band gap DMS belongs to the new class of “Dilute magnetic dielectrics”, or DMD proposed recently. Thermally-activated processes involved in establishment of ferromagnetism will be identified. For this purpose, we will perform high temperature (up to 900 K) magnetic measurements using the Quantum Design SQUID magnetometer and both ex-situ and in-situ annealing experiments at IFGW. (AU)
